Why Mother Blessings?

I first came across the idea of a Mother Blessing when I was pregnant with my second baby. I knew I wanted to celebrate by upcoming birth but I also knew I didn't want the traditional baby shower again. We had everything we needed for a newborn so having a baby shower just meant gifts we didn't need or double ups. What I wanted was food for those first few weeks and an afternoon with my closest friends to prepare for my labour.
Enter the Mother Blessing!
A Mother Blessing is an adaptation of a Blessingway, a traditional ceremony, originally from Navajo tradition, that honours and supports a woman during her transition into motherhood. The Navajo are Indigenous to the Southwestern United States.
I knew this was for me. I googled what it involved and found so many different rituals that could be included in a Mother Blessing and got planning!
I loved it. I felt prepared. I felt seen. And most of all, I felt supported by my closest friends and ready to birth my second baby.
I love being able to bring this ceremony to other women now too and I love that they are completely personalised for the mother to be.
The ceremony can include; a postpartum bath soak creation, birth affirmations, sharing of Birth and Motherhood Blessings, belly painting, feet or body massage, a red thread ritual, making of a birthing necklace or anything the mother to be wants or needs!
Guests are invited to bring a frozen meal if it is held at the mothers house or the promise of dropping food around once baby is earthside.
The more we celebrate and hold the mother, the better our lives are. We are meant to celebrate these milestones and transitions as a sisterhood and I love being able to bring these to my little community!
